I’ve heard so many tales of how Old Delhi becomes (even more of) a food paradise when the sun goes down during the holy month of Ramadan. When I found out Delhi Food Walks (DFW) was organising a ‘Sehri Food Walk’, I immediately jumped on the opportunity. It was time to check out all the buzz for myself!
The DFW group met at 11 pm outside gate no. 5 of the Chandni Chowk Metro station. The group was pretty large, there were at least 30 of us (more the merrier?). After a brief overview of what to expect from the walk, we began our gastronomic journey with Mr. Anubhav Sapra, founder of DFW leading the way!
A Whole New World
We marched up Chandni Chowk towards Fatehpuri. Though I’ve been on this road many times, it was a whole new world!
I’ve never been to this side of town so late at night . A calm, non-crowded peaceful Chandni Chowk, sounds a bit like an oxy moron but that’s where I somehow found myself to be. Note: Relatively calm and quiet for CC standards – there were still quite a few vehicles and people.
We stopped to give our condolences to the legendary 200 year old methai shop – Ghantewala (ring a bell?) that recently shut shop for good.
Lemon ka Zaika lena Banta hai
Our first official stop was Ved Prakash Lemon Wale. (we covered this place in our other Chandni Chowk post) -the inventor of the masala banta. This time Ved Prakash’s great grandson who runs the shop now, was telling us some cool stories about the place.
The most badass story being when their bottles were used as weapons against the british. Pressurised bottle + Marble + Gunpowder = lethal weapon. The best part is, you could probably have a refreshing drink after killing someone. Can your AK47 do that?! #AajKalKeGuns
Our next stop in Fatehpuri was Zaika. Since this place is famous for it’s mutton, we tried their mutton kebab parantha which is basically a mutton seekh kebab, wrapped in a parantha with some onions. Its simplicity is what worked for me. Looking forward to trying some of their other mutton dishes next time. (they also have a branch in Daryaganj)
Better Omelette than never
We continued towards the Chawri Bazzar Area and stopped at Khan Omelette Corner. This place was pretty crowded.
But Khan chacha was unaffected by the crowd! He was in total zen mode and kept on churning out omelette after omelette without a break! His process is fascinating! You can stare at him doing his thing for hours. The way be breaks the eggs, and then melts the butter on the pan, the 12 masalas he adds along with a whole slice of cheese and ends it with a toss! #EfficiencyLevelsAreOver9000
With the amount of love, grace and ingredients that goes into making each omelette, the taste, as expected was wonderful!
What I like about Purani Dilli is that they’re pretty no non-sense with their names – Old Famous Jalebi wala, Lemon Wale and now ‘Old Kheer Shop’. Like the name, this place is also no nonsense with their approach to their food – Simple, chilled Kheer that tastes lovely! Kheer can’t get better than this!
So after the Kheer, we went looking for some Kebab place in the Lal Kuan area of Chawri Bazaar. The last time we had come here it was so so crowded. Probably the most crowded place I had seen in my life. Seeing it empty felt extremely bizarre!
Last time we couldn’t find the Kebab place and this time unfortunately for us, they had finished. #BadLuckHunar
Buzzing Matia Mahal
From Chawri Bazaar we headed to the Jama Masjid area! The weird feeling of empty Old Delhi instantly evaporated like *snaps fingers! This place was SO crowded, it was like any ordinary weekday, the only difference was that it was 2 am on our clocks!
All the shops and eateries were operating at full capacity! The food, the ramzan shopping and decorations, it was all very lively! There wasn’t much place to move! If you want to see Ramadan Raunaq, THIS is where you have to be. You have to experience this to truly appreciate it, I’m not going to even attempt typing it out.
We squeezed our way to Kareems for some Nihari, but unfortunately they were completely packed! Second setback of the night! But what followed next blew my mind (and probably my arteries)!
The most literal Butter Chicken EVER!
We headed to Aslam Chicken Corner. This was a place that’s been on my food bucket list for years! The day had finally come to try their super famous “Butter Chicken”! But this is not the butter chicken you’ve known all your life. It’s literally butter and chicken. Tandoori Chicken swimming in a pool of butter. Simple but SUPER effective. This place has been officially added to “Hunar’s happy place” list.
After this meal, we all were probably sweating butter.
The Lost Biryani – Dil Pasand
Now this is where the brilliance of Mr. Sapra comes in, I have no clue how he discovered this place or how we even got there. But after navigating the disorienting narrow inner gullis of Matia Mahal, we somehow reached our desitnation – Dilpasand Biryani Point.
But it was worth the effort. They serve buff biryani (so if you’re not into that kinda meat, you shouldn’t attempt this quest)The meat was very very well cooked and they mixed normal rice and the biryani rice to create an interesting combination. Dil pasand, taste pasand!
Pyaar Mohabbat Mazza
Now after exiting the labyrinth of the inner gullis, our next desitnation was this thela dude selling what he calls – Pyar Mohabbat Maza. A drink only available during the summers, it’s basically Roohafza, milk and water melon juice. I know the combo doesn’t sound great, I was pretty skeptical on what it would taste like…but boy was I wrong! For me it was the highlight of the walk, super refreshing and just awesome. Pyaar aur mohabbat ka pata nahi, but maza toh zaroor aaya! #MohabbatBarsaDenaTu
Next up, Phirni at Cool Point. Great, no frills attached matka phirni served chilled. What I usually hate about phirnis which are not made at home is the weird artificial essence they sometimes put. Fortunately, this phirni was devoid of that. So I was pretty ‘cool’ with it and really enjoyed the phirni!
Tere Sewai Koi Bhi Nahi hai
We ended the food part of the walk with the quintessential ‘sehri’ dish – ‘Sewai’ at Haji Tea Point. Again, Sewai is something I wasn’t a fan of, but this place has changed my opinion about the dish completely! It wasn’t a usual kheer that I’m used to having. It was a lump of pure-desi ghee Sewai in a porridge bowl served with milk! It was kinda crunchy and the milk had absorbed a bit of the sewai’s flavour. The best part is that it wasn’t very sweet! For me, it was the best Sewai I’ve ever had. #Buzzedar
This is the End
After spending the last 5 hours hogging on the various delicacies Purani Dilli had on offer, we ended up at Jama Masjid. It was a marvellous way to end what had been a fairly busy night, with some peace, quiet and introspection. The structure itself is as magnificent as ever, and had a different charm under the moon light. Sitting there, reflecting upon our city’s incredible history and heritage, I guess I can say I had one of those ‘Delhi’ moments!
It was a great night! Yes the humidity did take it’s toll on my appetite but visiting Old Delhi during the month of Ramadan is an experience that I highly recommend.
I don’t think I can thank Mr. Sapra of Delhi Food Walks enough for this wonderful experience! (you can check out their photographs of the walk here).
I have buzzed about all the places mentioned here on the GoBuzzinga app (available on Google Play). You can check them out and navigate there directly so you don’t have trouble finding them. You can find these buzzes by searching for ‘#DelhiFoodWalks’ on the app.
Hope you’ve enjoyed reading this post, I’d love to hear what are your favourite ‘Delhi moments’ and experiences that you recommend!
